Description
Each piece is sawn from the original top face of a genuine Victorian gritstone street cobble, preserving the surface worn by generations of traffic while removing the bulk and weight beneath.
The stone of Northern streets
Gritstone is a coarse, hard-wearing sandstone that shaped the towns and cities of the Pennines, Peak District and South Yorkshire. Its rugged grain and deep, weathered tones of grey, brown and soft charcoal give it a bolder, more dramatic look than other sandstones. Decades of use have softened each cobble’s face into a characterful, time-worn finish, with the natural texture of the stone providing good grip underfoot.
All the character, less of the work
At approximately 40mm to 50mm thick, cobble tops make laying a traditional cobbled surface simpler and more affordable:
- Shallower excavation: less ground to dig out
- Quicker to lay: lighter, more consistent pieces
- Reduced delivery costs: less weight per square metre
- Genuine Victorian finish: the same aged surface as full-depth cobbles
For driveways and vehicle areas, lay on a mortar bed over a rigid concrete base.
Ideal for
- Driveways and parking areas
- Farmhouse courtyards and yards
- Paths, edging and decorative banding
- Period homes, barn conversions and conservation areas
- Projects where excavation depth is limited
Sold by the square metre
Supplied in random sizes and priced per square metre for straightforward ordering. As cobble tops are cut from reclaimed stock, individual pieces may vary from the images shown. Viewings at our Sheffield yard are always welcome.
A sustainable choice
Reusing original Victorian cobbles keeps historic stone in use and reduces the need for new quarrying.
